Why I believe an overloaded mind impacts our confidence, in a big way.
What is confidence, Confidence is a person’s sense of self-assurance that arises from appreciating their own abilities or qualities.
Confidence affects how you carry yourself and interact with others , through posture, tone, and behaviour. People who appear confident tend to inspire trust and respect.
It’s the quiet assurance that, even if things don’t go perfectly, you can handle them, a mix of self-trust, experience, and resilience.
1. Cognitive Effects (Thinking & Focus)
Stress floods the brain with cortisol, the “stress hormone,” which can interfere with concentration, memory, and decision-making.
When you can’t think clearly or recall information easily, you may start doubting yourself, leading to lower confidence.Example: Before an exam, high stress makes you forget what you studied, and you start believing you’re not prepared (even if you are).
2. Self-Talk & Negative Thinking
Under stress, people often experience more self-critical thoughts (“I can’t do this,” “I’m going to mess up”).
This negative inner dialogue erodes self-belief and replaces confidence with anxiety or hesitation.
3. Physical Symptoms
Stress causes tension, fatigue, rapid heartbeat, sweating, and other symptoms that feel like losing control.
These sensations can be mistaken for signs of weakness or failure, which reinforces self-doubt.
4. Performance Loop
Stress → poorer performance → self-criticism → lower confidence → more stress.
This becomes a cycle, where each stage fuels the next unless broken by relaxation or self-regulation strategies.
5. Long-Term Impact
Chronic stress can gradually make you feel burned out or powerless, which undermines your belief in your ability to handle challenges.
Over time, it can lead to impostor syndrome or fear of taking risks.
You can not be told to be confident, you can not even convince yourself, it has nothing to do with knowledge or intelligence, its about being connected, and there is no better way to disconnect your neurones than taking on to much, being negative and absorbing to much information, add alcohol and mobile phone usage Into the mix and this really can start to unplug your brain.
My Job is to help create an environment of growth that creates a fertile environment for your incredible brain to connect, delivering back to you confidence and sense of worth.
